Michael crichton time6/24/2023 ![]() Self-Replicating Robots : In Prey (2002), Crichton created a world of self-replicating nanorobots with rudimentary intelligence and predatory instincts, who spend several hundred pages running amok and causing all sorts of mayhem. Since then, there's been Kanzi, a bonobo who "apparently has learned more than 3,000 spoken English words and can produce (by means of lexigrams) novel English sentences and comprehend English sentences he has never heard before." Granted, those who doubted before remain unconvinced. Cute little Amy, with her sign language glove (which appeared in the movie but not the book), was loosely based on Koko the gorilla, whose actual linguistic abilities continue to be debated. It also highlighted what was once a novel concept: that apes could use human language to communicate. Talking Gorillas : Congo (1980) was more than just another notch into the decent-book-cum-awful-movie belt. Given the recent death of best-selling author and sci-fi pioneer Michael Crichton, we thought it was the perfect time to reflect on some of his most innovative and fascinating ideas.that just happened to have come true. ![]()

Amazon delivering happiness6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That type of drone can be deployed relatively quickly, but it limits delivery operations to a small radius. Those systems will require visual observers along the route of every flight to help the drones avoid hazards. For example, most drones do not have the capability to sense and avoid other aircraft and obstacles-and it’s easy to understand why that could pose problems. The logistics industry is abuzz with all-things drones. We are working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and local officials in Lockeford to obtain permission to conduct these deliveries and will continue with that collaboration into the future. "It's exciting that Amazon will be listening to the feedback of the San Joaquin County community to inform the future development of this technology." ![]() "Lockeford residents will soon have access to one of the world's leading delivery innovations,” said California State Assemblyman Heath Flora, whose district includes Lockeford. As we launch the service in Lockeford, we’ll also be investing in the community, creating new jobs, building partnerships with local organizations, and helping reduce carbon emissions-all thanks to this futuristic technology that could one day become just as common as seeing an Amazon delivery van pull up outside your house. ![]()

The Letter Q by Sarah Moon6/22/2023 ![]() ![]() The Letter Q asked sixty-four LGBT authors and illustrators, “What would you say to your younger self?” This anthology is the result-sixty-four letters (a handful of them in comic form) with advice ranging from “it gets better” to “kiss the girl!” to “invest in Google”. It would have served the exact same function in my development.) I think I first heard of this collection via Malinda Lo, even though she’s not a contributor (EDIT: she is!), and I knew I wanted to read it-besides being a treasury of good advice, David Levithan, Gregory Maguire, and Erika Moen contributed pieces. (Look, between a punch to the face and two years of Debate, I would have sprung for the punch in the face. ![]() Obviously, it’s rather tempting to start off this review with a brief note to my younger self, mimicking the entire concept of The Letter Q, but you can’t fit a punch in the face in a letter, even a letter to the past. ![]() |
